Full Statement Media: Ceramic, Glass, Metal
Stu Gray
I handcraft the entirety of each piece. My work has evolved to incorporate multiple media: porcelain, wood, found objects, and wrought metal. I began in ceramics and came to specialize in crystalline porcelain. But the combination of the translucency of porcelain and the beauty of crystalline, begged to be explored. Hence the lamps. My aesthetic is simply the reverence of nature. My work is a humble and futile attempt to synthesize it. Better I should be a gardener, which I am when I’m not making lamps. Crystalline Porcelain consists of metal crystals in a field of glass, fired on a base of high temperature porcelain bisque. The process dates back to the late Ming Dynasty (circa 1640 AD). |
