Dyer studied at the Atlanta College of Art at the High Museum of Art; she furthered her studies with the Russian Portraitist/Muralist Roman Chatov; Marc Chatov, Portraitist; Kate Fetterolf, Pastelist; and James Richards, Painter. She is a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America; she is in the Masters Circle of the International Association of Pastel Societies, and is an award-winner in the American Impressionist Society, Margaret has been featured many times in several publications: The Artists Magazine, American Artist, International Artist, Pastel Artist International, The Pastel Journal, and How Did You Paint That? She teaches pastel workshops across the country, in France, Ireland and Italy.

About Pastel

Pastel is one of the most misunderstood of all media. Often confused with chalk, which is limestone and dye, pastel is actually dry powdered pigment molded into a crayon shape with binding solution. The word pastel is derived from the paste made by grinding the pigment and its liquid binding solution. Because the pigments have lasting brilliance, pastel is as close as an artist can come to painting with pure color. There is no cracking or discoloring with age.

When properly cared for, pastel is among the most permanent of all media. Pastel paintings in the Academy of Fine Arts on the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy, are as vibrant and fresh today as they were when they were painted in 1703. Despite the heat, humidity and lack of air conditioning, the pastel paintings remain in perfect condition and have never needed restoration.
