Jim Kransberger is a self-taught contemporary artist in North Carolina whose early works feature unique mechanical movement, known as “automata.” Recently he has transitioned to working with clay, moving from folk art to contemporary sculpture. Humor is a common theme in all of his works.
I am an aficionado of great one liner's; have a passion for the narrative within editorial cartoons, especially those of The New Yorker magazine; have always had a love of good satire and social criticism from any direction. Good, dry jokes break me up. People who laugh at themselves intrigue me.
Although I have no communicative end goal or game, I am trying to improve my aim, tightening my sights on how I present my work’s subject matter clearer, getting more definitive. Arguably, my early comic, whimsical attempts at humor have gotten more focused, more specific. Maybe, not so funny.
You're pretty much on your own as to guessing what I've said or am saying with my work. Regardless of my intent, I can only hope I’ve spoken in a clear enough voice as to get you to say “Oh yes” when you compare my work with its title. Titling is a lot of fun; and, I am a very bad traffic cop when it comes to giving directions.
If you’re thinking about what I did prior to getting into this clay making mode, I was an independent manufacturers’ sales representative in the hobby and craft industry, owner of the largest hobby shop in out-state Michigan, a sales engineer selling semi-technical kilowatt hour meters to electric utilities, owned a monthly newspaper, photographed competitive sailboat racing, and maybe a couple dozen more non-consecutive ventures. About 95% of the time I’ve worked for myself. I do better when I am doing it for myself — clay allows me to do that and marching in straight lines just isn’t for me.
Looked up a report card that just emerged from somewhere in my sister’s attic. It was from the Edna B. Rowe School, a kindergarten, in Toledo, Ohio issued in May 1940.
